EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) is an evidence-based, integrative form of treatment which was originally designed to treat various forms of trauma, but has since been expanded to treat numerous other diagnoses including depression and anxiety. EMDR has been shown to treat most mental health challenges more quickly than traditional talk therapy. It is also often effective in treating individuals who have “treatment resistant” symptoms and have not found success in previous therapies.

Traumatic experiences result in emotional and physiological experiences which are beyond the psyche’s ability to regulate. This causes the nervous system to become overwhelmed and the part of the brain responsible for our understanding of time, place and analytical thinking to temporarily turn off. The traumatic memory is then “maladaptively stored” in the long-term memory. This can be expressed in a variety of diagnoses such as PTSD, anxiety, depression, adhd, and phobias. This process also results in the symptoms which might bring you to therapy such as co-dependent relationships, “irrational thoughts” or “overthinking”, avoidance, substance use, perfectionism, and low self-esteem.

EMDR involves intentionally and mindfully bringing traumatic material back into the short-term memory, using a technique called “bilateral stimulation” to assist in keeping the left brain on so that the traumatic material can be effectively processed and return to the long-term memory in “adaptively stored” form. EMDR is a self-healing modality, meaning that your own brain and body will be entrusted with doing the healing. It is a very safe and widely researched form of treatment.

I am an EMDRIA EMDR certified therapist which acknowledges that I have additional training, consultations, and education beyond the basic training of most EMDR therapists. Due to this extensive training, I feel intimately familiar with and very confident in working with EMDR.

If EMDR is not a good fit for any reason, I am also very well trained and open to working with trauma via traditional talk therapy.
